چکیده

Heritage space telescope mirror technology—i.e. large, monolithic glass primary mirrors—has reached an upper limit on allowable aperture diameter given launch vehicle volume and mass constraints. The next generation of space telescopes will feature lightweight, actively controlled, segmented primary mirrors in order to achieve the advances in angular resolution and sensitivity that larger aperture diameters permit. Active control via embedded surface-parallel electrostrictive actuators provides the capability to change a mirror segment’s optical prescription on orbit, to correct either quasi-static disturbances or manufacturing errors. Commanding low-order prescription changes (e.g. radius of curvature) using discretely-placed actuators, however, induces high spatial frequency residual error in the mirror surface figure, resulting in wavefront error (WFE) that degrades optical performance. A key challenge is reducing this actuator-induced high frequency WFE to below acceptable levels while simultaneously commanding a particular change in global shape. This thesis considers a new set of geometric design variables that affect high-spatial frequency residual error in an effort to mitigate actuator-induced WFE. Specifically, less conventional variations in rib height, actuator geometry, and rib-to-facesheet intersection geometry are exploited to achieve improved performance in silicon carbide (SiC) mirrors. A parametric finite element model is used to explore the trade space among these new parameters and to predict performance improvements. Simulation results show that these additional geometric considerations reduce actuator-induced WFE while keeping mirror mass and complexity constant. Thesis Supervisor: David W. Interaction matrix uncertainty in active (and adaptive) optics.

Uncertainty in the interaction matrix between sensors and actuators can lead to performance degradation or instability in control of segmented mirrors (typically the telescope primary). The interaction matrix is ill conditioned, and thus the position estimate required for control can be highly sensitive to small errors in knowledge of the matrix, due to uncertainty or temporal variations. The r...

Owl Optical Design, Active Optics and Error Budget

We explore solutions for the optical design of the OWL 100-m telescope, and discuss their properties, advantages and drawbacks in relation to top level requirements. Combining cost, design, fabrication and functionality issues, and taking into account the scale of the telescope, we conclude that the requirements are best met with a design based on spherical primary and secondary mirrors. The co...

Generalized figure-control algorithm for large segmented telescope mirrors

A fundamental discovery in segmented-mirror active optics is described: symmetrizing the geometry of the sensor–actuator array provides a computationally effective symmetrization of the mathematical description for the figure control of a Keck-type telescope mirror. The author establishes a universal mathematical control model and provides an efficient algorithm to solve this model equation set...

Active Optics and Coronography with the Hubble Space Telescope

In the eld of planet and proto-planetary disk detection, achieving high angular resolution and high dynamic range is a necessity. Ground images are blurred by atmospheric turbulence and therefore adaptive optics is necessary to achieve sub-arcsecond images. Coronography coupled with adaptive optics on ground-based telescopes is a way to get both good spatial resolution and high dynamic range. H...
